A MicroFrige is a microwave and refrigerator all in one. Most schools allow the use of a MicroFrige in the residence halls (as long as microwaves are allowed). In fact, many schools will rent MicroFriges to new students at a cost of over $200 per semester (that's a lot of money). It may be more economical for you to buy a refrigerator and microwave separately, than it is pay $200 per semester to rent a single unit. The best option of all is to buy a used MicroFrige! Of course, that may be easier said than done. Check your local newspaper classifieds for microfriges, ask family and friends who have students graduating if you can buy theirs, or even ask co-workers if they know anyone who is looking to sell one. Trust us, companies make a killing renting microfriges for a couple hundred buck a semester.
The reason colleges and universities like Microfriges so much is because a microfrige does not allow the refrigerator and Microwave to be in use at the same time. When the microwave is in use the refrigerator shuts off. This is a tremendous help for the school's power supply. Picture a school of 20,000 students where a quarter of them are using the microwave at the same time... that's a lot of juices! It's not hard to see why schools are so fond on the good ol' Microfrige, it's just too bad that they contract companies that charge such outrageous prices to rent them.
If you can't find a used Microfrige you can always buy a new one. The links on this page will point you to a few places to get you started.
