Keeping In Touch From College For Cheap

Long-distance phone bills can get very high during freshman year. Because many students will be calling home a few times a week, talking to relatives, and calling their 30 closest friends (cross-country), long-distance bills will start to look more like another tuition bill. Not to worry! Below are some suggestions to keep the phone bill from turning into something that you need to finance!

I. Many cellular phone plans offer free nationwide calling.
Cellular plans have become very competitive and many offer free nationwide calling and a lot of free minutes. There are also plans available that include unlimited phone-to-phone calling that can save you tons of money! Read more about the benefits of cell phones in the "What To Bring and Why" section under the title "Cell Phone."

II. If you will be calling home a lot have mom and dad get an "800" number (are we clever or what !).
You will have no control over your long-distance provider at school, and the rates may be a little higher than normal. If you will be calling home frequently you can save money by getting an "800" number that has lower rates than those offered at your school.

III. Calling cards are always a safe bet.
Using calling cards can save you a few bucks on long-distance calls, but be careful about which cards you buy. Read more about calling cards in the "What to bring to college" under the title "Phone Cards."
