You should do your best to attend your college orientation if you have the option. Orientation serves as a preview of college life, and will help to get you familiar with your new surroundings and the people you will be going to school with.
I. Don't be afraid to participate in activities.
Your school will have a number of activities planned during orientation that will help you to get more comfortable with campus, meet fellow students, and make new friends. If you actively participate in the activities, these things will happen all by themselves! Even if you're a little shy, do your best to get involved at orientation. Your effort will really pay off when move-in day comes and you already have a bunch of friends!
II. Pack lightly for orientation.
The majority of college orientations are only a couple days long at the most, and there is no need to pack a ton of stuff. Your school will provide you with an orientation package that will include a complete itinerary and a list of things that they suggest you bring. Generally, it is a good idea to pack everything that your school suggests, and any special things you may require. As you pack, keep in mind any special events that will be planned for you. For example, if your school will be hosting a formal dance at orientation you should remember to pack the appropriate attire. Showing up to a formal dance wearing a t-shirt and jeans would not make a great first impression!
III. Don't sweat it if you can't go.
It is important to attend orientation if you have the option, but sometimes this option is not available. It's not the end of the world if you can't attend your college orientation. Plenty of students have been unable to make orientation, and they have all turned out to be perfectly normal!
